St. Augustine is one of the most beautiful places in Florida for an intimate wedding. Between its historic streets, coastal scenery, and unique wedding venues, there are plenty of ways to create a celebration that feels personal without planning a large, traditional wedding.

Whether you're imagining a barefoot beach ceremony, exchanging vows in a historic courtyard, or celebrating somewhere a little unexpected, choosing the right setting can make all the difference.

As a St. Augustine wedding and elopement photographer, I love helping couples find locations that not only photograph beautifully but also fit the experience they're hoping to have.

Here are 10 of the best places to elope in St. Augustine, along with a few photography tips and things to consider before booking.

1) Vilano Beach: Quiet, Natural, and Intimate

Vilano Beach is one of my favorite places for couples who want a relaxed, intimate coastal elopement. Located just north of downtown St. Augustine, it offers open shoreline, beautiful ocean views, and a quieter atmosphere during the early morning hours.

I especially love photographing sunrise elopements here. The soft morning light, movement of the water, and peaceful surroundings create beautiful opportunities for natural, candid photographs.

Best for: Couples who want a simple beach ceremony, barefoot portraits, and a relaxed experience.

A photographer's tip: Check the tide schedule and plan around sunrise when possible. St. Johns County also requires permits for beach weddings and elopements, even with just a few guests.

2) Downtown St. Augustine – Historic & Full of Character

If you love historic architecture and charming streets, downtown St. Augustine is hard to beat. From Aviles Street to the quieter corners of the historic district, you'll find brick-lined walkways, coquina walls, and beautiful architectural details.

Downtown is especially wonderful for couples who want a combination of classic portraits and candid photographs while exploring the city together.

Best for: Couples who love historic scenery, variety in their photographs, and celebrating with dinner or drinks afterward.

A photographer's tip: Plan portraits earlier in the morning or on a weekday to avoid some of the crowds. For ceremonies, choose an approved venue rather than assuming any public courtyard or street can be used. Photography on City-owned property also requires a permit.

3) Lightner Museum Courtyard: Elegant and Historic

Bride and groom embrace in a courtyard garden beneath palm trees, framed by a historic Spanish Renaissance building with arched walkways.
A bride in a white gown and veil rings a brass bell by pulling a rope while a smiling groom in a dark suit watches beside an arched doorway.

The Lightner Museum courtyard is one of St. Augustine's most recognizable wedding settings. Surrounded by beautiful Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture, archways, palm trees, and a reflecting pool, it offers a romantic atmosphere in the heart of downtown.

It's a wonderful option for couples who want a designated ceremony location with easy access to additional portraits around the historic district.

Best for: Intimate ceremonies with elegant architecture and a classic, romantic atmosphere.

A photographer's tip: The courtyard's surrounding buildings create different areas of sunlight and shade throughout the day. Small ceremonies and elopements are arranged through The Wedding Authority, so check availability before planning your timeline.

4) Castle Otttis: Unique and Romantic

If you're looking for an elopement location unlike anywhere else in St. Augustine, Castle Otttis is worth considering.

Located near Vilano Beach, this privately owned castle was designed to resemble an ancient Irish castle, complete with dramatic stone walls, arched windows, and a chapel-inspired interior.

It's an incredible setting for couples who love historic-inspired architecture and want something a little different from a traditional Florida wedding.

I also had the opportunity to photograph a wedding at nearby Castlegate Vacation Rental, another intimate setting near Vilano Beach that offers a different atmosphere from the more traditional venues downtown.

Best for: Couples looking for a distinctive, intimate ceremony with dramatic architectural details.

A photographer's tip: Allow time for portraits that showcase the castle itself. Castle Otttis is available by appointment, requires advance arrangements, and is not wheelchair accessible.

5) Peña-Peck House: A Hidden Garden in Downtown

Two women in white and black dresses hold hands near a fountain in lush garden.

Tucked along St. George Street, the historic Peña-Peck House offers a charming garden courtyard surrounded by greenery and historic architecture.

With mature trees, a private courtyard atmosphere, and a location right in the heart of downtown, it's a lovely alternative to a beach ceremony.

Best for: Couples who love romantic garden settings but still want to be close to downtown St. Augustine.

A photographer's tip: The surrounding trees can create beautiful, softer light for portraits. The garden is a managed wedding venue, so you'll need to arrange a reservation rather than treating it as an open public ceremony space.

How to Choose the Right St. Augustine Elopement Location

Bride and groom stand facing each other in stone castle tower at dusk.

With so many beautiful places to consider, the best location really comes down to what kind of experience you want.

If you're still deciding, here's how I'd narrow things down:

  • For a peaceful beach ceremony: Vilano Beach

  • For historic streets and candid portraits: Downtown St. Augustine

  • For elegant architecture: Lightner Museum Courtyard

  • For a romantic garden setting: Peña-Peck House

  • For something truly unique: Castle Otttis

You also don't have to choose just one setting for your entire day.

One of the things I love about St. Augustine is how easy it can be to combine different backdrops. You might exchange vows in a historic courtyard and explore downtown afterward, or have a beach ceremony before heading somewhere else for portraits.

When planning your photography timeline, I recommend choosing locations that work well together so you can enjoy your day without feeling rushed.
